Jakarta (ANTARA) - The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government will soon launch the declaration of a household waste sorting movement in the Kuningan area, South Jakarta, on Sunday, 10 May 2026.

“Tomorrow, in Kuningan, we will start the event for sorting waste, in accordance with the Governor’s instructions,” said DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung while delivering a speech at the Interfaith Harmony and Unity Walk event at the Cathedral, Jakarta, on Saturday.

He stated that Jakarta can no longer rely on the Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST) in Bantargebang, Bekasi, which now holds around 55 million tonnes of waste.

“We can no longer rely on the old method of dumping all waste in Bantargebang; there is already more than 55 million tonnes of waste. It is no longer sufficient and has experienced landslides several times,” Pramono said.

Therefore, he continued, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is collaborating with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry to launch the household waste sorting movement.

The public, Pramono said, must sort waste into four categories: easily degradable waste that can be processed into compost and recyclable waste, such as plastic, paper, and metal, which can be channelled to waste banks.

Then, hazardous and toxic waste (B3) and residual waste that cannot be recycled.

Socialisation of the household waste sorting movement has been carried out in the Jakarta region, including the Thousand Islands.

The pilot of the household waste sorting movement has been implemented for three months in Rorotan and Cilincing.

Pramono hopes that the movement can be carried out maximally by all parties.
