Jakarta (ANTARA) - The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is constructing five pedestrian crossing points (zebra crossings) on Jalan Soepomo in Tebet, South Jakarta, to improve the safety and comfort of road users. “We hope that the presence of these zebra crossings will support safer and more orderly mobility for residents, while strengthening a culture of mutual respect on the roads,” stated the Head of the DKI Jakarta Road Infrastructure Agency, Heru Suwondo, in Jakarta on Monday (30/3). He acknowledged that the lack of crossing facilities in the area has caused discomfort for the public. Four of the zebra crossings began construction on Monday (30/3). According to Heru, this situation arose from periodic road maintenance activities as well as the construction and improvement of sidewalks at the end of 2025, which covered the previous zebra crossing markings with a new layer of asphalt. Additionally, high rainfall has posed challenges to the construction process. “It should be noted that reapplying road markings cannot be done immediately after asphalt laying. Thermoplastic marking material requires the road surface to undergo an optimal drying period to ensure proper adhesion and maximum durability,” he explained. Heru appreciated the concern and initiative of the community, who have painted the roads to function as zebra crossings. This participation reflects collective awareness of the importance of safety in public spaces. In line with that, at points created independently by the community, the zebra crossings will be redeveloped gradually according to technical standards, taking into account the existing conditions on the ground.
