DKI Provincial Government Commits to Facilitating Betawi Cultural Development

The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is committed to assisting with facility improvements and encouraging the enhancement of community capacity to develop Betawi culture while strengthening residents’ economies. Therefore, Deputy Governor of DKI Jakarta Rano Karno hopes that the community will continue to be creative, including creating distinctive Betawi batik motifs that represent the five-century journey of the capital. “Initiatives like this are important. As a global city, Jakarta must not forget its cultural roots. It is precisely from this cultural richness that the city’s identity grows and is passed down. Culture is not merely a heritage, but the spirit that gives meaning to every development in Jakarta,” said Rano in a statement in Jakarta on Saturday. Rano attended the launch of distinctive Sukapura Betawi Batik at the Sukapura Betawi Cultural Village in Cilincing, North Jakarta, on Friday (10/4). He also assessed that the existence of cultural areas, such as the Sukapura Betawi Cultural Village, plays an important role in preserving traditions. He urged that batik training be continuously increased, including the development of techniques such as eco print. “This batik activity can sustain the residents here. Therefore, I urge it to develop further,” Rano stated. He also hopes that Sukapura Betawi Batik will not only be known in Jakarta but will also be able to penetrate national and international markets. To that end, collaboration between the government, artisans, business actors, cultural activists, and the younger generation must be continuously strengthened so that this cultural heritage develops further and becomes a source of pride. On that occasion, Rano also appreciated the artistic performances by residents, including children. He is optimistic that through continuous coaching, they can perform in wider public spaces.
