DKI Provincial Government Begins Constructing New Zebra Crossings in Tebet, Total of 5 Locations

JAKARTA - The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government, through the Road Infrastructure Agency (DBM), has begun constructing five new zebra crossing points on Jalan Soepomo, Tebet, South Jakarta.

The Head of the DKI Jakarta Provincial Road Infrastructure Agency, Heru Suwondo, stated that four of these points are scheduled to commence work on Monday evening (30/3/2026).

“We hope that the presence of these zebra crossings will support safer and more orderly mobility for residents, while strengthening the culture of mutual respect on the roads,” Heru said in his statement on Tuesday (31/3/2026).

This situation previously prompted initiatives from residents and several graffiti artists who repainted the zebra crossings in vibrant colours using spray paint, even adding Pac-Man game illustrations.

He explained that the disappearance of the previous zebra crossing markings was a result of periodic road maintenance activities, as well as the construction and improvement of sidewalks at the end of 2025.

This process caused the old markings to be covered by a new layer of asphalt. Additionally, high rainfall also posed challenges in accelerating the work.

“It should be noted that reinstalling road markings cannot be done immediately after asphalt laying. Thermoplastic marking material requires the road surface to have undergone an optimal drying period so that it can adhere properly and have maximum durability,” he clarified.

Furthermore, Heru appreciated the community’s concern in taking the initiative to paint the roads as temporary zebra crossings.

The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government, he continued, will reorganise the zebra crossings at points that were previously made independently by the community.

The reorganisation will be carried out gradually in accordance with technical standards, taking into account field conditions.
