The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government has affirmed that it will not tolerate illegal parking practices in the capital and plans to overhaul the parking management system to make it more organised and transparent. This statement comes in the wake of allegations of illegal parking operations in the Blok M Square area, South Jakarta, which is currently under investigation by the DKI Provincial Government alongside the Jakarta DPRD’s Special Committee on Parking. Deputy Coordinator of the Governor’s Special Staff, Yustinus Prastowo, stated that the overhaul will not only involve enforcement but also improvements in governance and the digitalisation of the parking system. According to him, the Transportation Agency (Dishub) and the Regional Revenue Agency (Bapenda) are currently delving into the allegations of illegal parking at Blok M Square, particularly regarding licensing aspects and parking tax payments. “Right now, Dishub and Bapenda are conducting an in-depth investigation because this involves licensing aspects and parking tax collection,” Yustinus said. “This is what we are examining, whether there is no permit or if it is in process; that is what we are investigating together. We will provide updates and ensure everything is transparent,” he added. Yustinus further noted that the current parking management schemes in Jakarta are quite varied, ranging from those managed by private entities to partnerships with the local government. Previously, the Chairman of the DPRD DKI Jakarta’s Special Committee on Parking, Ahmad Lukman Jupiter, revealed that parking operators in the Blok M area are suspected of generating revenues of up to Rp 100 million per day. According to Jupiter, the parking revenue potential in that area could reach more than Rp 3 billion per month due to the high level of public activity in Blok M. However, he suspects that the remittances received by the government do not match the actual turnover. “What is remitted to the government does not match the turnover; about 60 percent of the reported turnover,” he said. Therefore, the Special Committee on Parking of the DPRD, together with Dishub DKI Jakarta, sealed the parking gates managed by those operators on Monday. For the time being, parking services in the Blok M Square area have been made free of charge.
