The Jakarta Provincial Government has taken a tactical step to prevent a recurrence of severe traffic congestion following Eid in the Tanjung Priok port area, North Jakarta. Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung revealed that his administration has quietly forged a crucial agreement with Pelindo to provide adequate emergency parking space. “Learning from the experience after last Eid, when horrific congestion occurred in Tanjung Priok, the Jakarta Provincial Government, together with Pelindo, without friends realising or knowing, collaborated and the Jakarta Provincial Government provided space to Pelindo of approximately 5 hectares at Terminal Tanah Merdeka for parking,” Pramono stated at City Hall, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday (31/3). According to him, this tactical provision of 5 hectares of land has proven effective in alleviating queues of heavy vehicles that often paralyse the North Jakarta area. Pramono detailed that the new parking area’s capacity can hold hundreds of containers, thus restoring conducive operational activities and mobility after the long holiday. “And alhamdulillah, up to today, after Eid al-Fitr, activities in Tanjung Priok are running well and normally. Because that place can hold approximately 200 containers,” he explained. Furthermore, he said, to facilitate the wheel of national logistics movement and prevent greater losses, the local government is allowing the terminal land to be used free of charge. This policy was adopted by Pramono considering the calculation of far more terrifying economic losses if the horrific congestion returns. “For that reason, we are also providing it free to Pelindo because if there were congestion like last year, the cost would be extremely high,” Pramono stated.
