DKI Jakarta’s Water Resources Department (SDA) explained the cause of the telecom tower collapse at Upper Cideng River, HR Rasuna Said Road, Setiabudi, South Jakarta. A video of the collapse went viral on social media.

The viral video, viewed on Tuesday, 26 May 2026, showed the telecom tower at HR Rasuna Said Road collapsing into the Upper Cideng River. In addition to the telecom tower, trees, street light poles, and road signs also fell.

Head of the Water Resources Department, Ika Agustin, stated the incident was triggered by unstable soil on the riverbank following heavy rain on Saturday, 23 May. She said the telecom tower collapsed around 9:00 AM WIB.

“On Saturday, 23 May 2026, around 9:00 AM WIB, utility poles collapsed at Upper Cideng River along HR Rasuna Said Road in Setiabudi, South Jakarta,” Ika said.

Ika explained that heavy rain caused the soil to become unstable, leading to a riverbank landslide that caused the telecom tower to collapse.

“This condition could increase pore water pressure and reduce the soil’s load-bearing capacity and slope stability, triggering the landslide in the area,” she added.

“As a result of the landslide, soil movement caused trees and utility poles near the landslide site to also collapse,” she added.

She stated that the collapsed poles were evacuated the same day, and fallen trees were cleared from the river channel.

“On Saturday evening following the incident, field officers evacuated the damaged utilities and fallen trees,” she said.
