The DKI Jakarta Transportation Agency (Dishub) will construct a pelican crossing on Jalan Kapten Tendean, South Jakarta, as a temporary measure while awaiting the reconstruction of a pedestrian bridge (JPO) previously demolished after being struck by a truck.

Head of the DKI Jakarta Dishub, Budi Awaluddin, stated the decision was based on the results of a meeting and a technical study completed by the agency. “Based on yesterday’s meeting, the JPO will indeed be rebuilt. However, the construction process will take quite a long time. Therefore, while waiting for that construction, we will build a pelican crossing,” Budi said when met in Central Jakarta on Wednesday.

He explained the pelican crossing is necessary because the distance between crossing facilities in the area is considerable, and the road is heavily congested. According to Dishub data, the traffic volume at the location reaches 2,579 vehicles per hour, while the number of pedestrians crossing is 874 people per hour.

“Normally, the ideal distance between crossing facilities is 100 to 200 metres. It turns out the distance here is far, so this crossing is very much needed by the public,” Budi explained.

He added that construction of the pelican crossing is now just waiting for the Bina Marga agency to dismantle the garden, central reservation, and road barrier. “We are waiting for Bina Marga to open the garden and the central reservation to build the pelican crossing. Once that is opened, we will immediately carry out the construction,” Budi revealed. He is targeting the pelican crossing to be built within the next one to two weeks.
