The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government has confirmed it will end the open dumping system at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST) by 1 August 2026. As a preparatory measure, Governor Pramono Anung is focusing on strengthening the role of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Waste Processing Sites (TPS 3R) at the upstream level.

Governor Pramono Anung stated that revitalising the TPS 3R is the main strategy to reduce the volume of waste sent to Bantargebang. This initiative includes investing in new equipment. “We are truly reviving the TPS 3R and investing in several pieces of equipment. The hope is that before waste is sent to Bantargebang, it has already been processed at the TPS 3R,” he said in South Jakarta on Tuesday (21/7).

Pramono is also scheduled to inspect four to five TPS 3R locations this week. The inspection aims to ensure the readiness of facilities to process waste so that the volume of residue ending up at the final disposal site can be significantly reduced.

Meanwhile, the transition process at the Bantargebang TPST has already begun. Since Friday (17/7), the Integrated Waste Management Unit (UPST) has been installing cover media on the upper area of Zone 2. Head of the DKI Jakarta Environmental Agency, Dudi Gardesi, explained that the site will consistently implement a controlled landfill system. “We will carry out every stage of the controlled landfill by rotating disposal points every seven days. Areas that have been used will be covered, while disposal is diverted to other prepared points,” Dudi explained. This mechanism is expected to maintain the stability of the landfill area and control environmental impacts more measurably.

In addition to covering the areas, the protection of the landfill will be strengthened by the gradual installation of geomembranes. This layer serves to protect the waste pile and support leachate water management to prevent contamination of the surrounding environment. The waste management standard improvement project also involves a creative financing scheme. The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is collaborating with the private sector through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes to meet technical material needs in accordance with applicable environmental standards.
