DKI Jakarta Regional House of Representatives Urges Waste Management Not Solely Dependent on Waste-to-Energy Plant

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Jakarta Regional House of Representatives has called for waste management in Jakarta not to rely solely on the construction of Waste-to-Energy Plants (PSEL). This is because the construction of such facilities will take considerable time. Yuke Yurike, Chair of Commission D of the Jakarta Regional House of Representatives, said the government must strengthen waste management from household level up to local processing facilities. According to Yuke, upstream waste management can begin by encouraging households to sort waste at source. Additionally, the government needs to increase facilities and support infrastructure for waste management within communities. Meanwhile, intermediate-level waste management should maximise existing facilities such as TPS 3R, TPST, RDF, and biogas plants. Yuke added that budgetary support and strengthened management systems are needed for more effective waste handling. Therefore, all parties are urged to participate to gradually resolve the waste issue. ‘We want all parties to help resolve Jakarta’s waste problem. At the very least, there should be progress,’ Yuke said. Meanwhile, Judistira Hermawan, Chair of the Jakarta Regional House of Representatives’ Special Committee on Waste Management, stated that Jakarta’s current waste volume is around 9,000 tonnes per day. Judistira said citizens must also be disciplined in sorting waste at home to improve waste management. ‘No matter the technology or cost, if there’s no collective support—including from the public—to sort waste at source, it will require everyone’s support,’ Judistira said. ‘This is a collective effort, involving all in DKI Jakarta, both government and citizens,’ Judistira added.
