DKI Jakarta Regional House of Representatives Stresses City Free of Muggings, Supports Strict Enforcement

Hardiyanto Kenneth, a member of the DKI Jakarta Regional House of Representatives from the PDI Perjuangan faction, stated that Jakarta must be free from street crimes, including the recent surge in muggings. ‘I want Jakarta to be free from muggings. The state must protect its citizens, not allow them to live in fear,’ Kenneth told Kompas.com in a text message on Friday, 30 May 2026. Street crimes such as muggings must not be allowed to proliferate in the capital, as they directly impact citizens’ sense of safety while going about their daily lives. ‘Muggings must be dealt with firmly, using targeted gunfire if the situation on the ground poses a threat to public or officer safety,’ he said. However, he stressed that enforcement must still adhere to legal procedures and be carried out professionally on the ground. ‘Human rights should not be interpreted solely as protecting offenders, but must also consider the public’s right to live safely,’ he added. Kenneth also highlighted the importance of preventive measures, including increased patrols in high-risk areas, additional CCTV cameras, and improved street lighting. He also urged stronger community security systems and youth development programs to prevent young people from turning to crime. Muggings and motorcycle thefts have surged in West Jakarta over the past month. Several cases involved firearms and bladed weapons, with victims being slashed, shot, or threatened at gunpoint during attacks. The incidents occurred across areas including Kebon Jeruk, Grogol, Kembangan, and Cengkareng. Perpetrators used various tactics, from snatching motorcycles on deserted roads to stealing them during the day while victims were eating.
