DKI Jakarta Provincial Government Extends Remote Learning to Anticipate Volcanic Ash Spread

Jakarta (ANTARA) – DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo has decided to extend Distance Learning (PJJ) for educational institutions in Jakarta until Tuesday (8/9) as a precautionary measure against potential exposure to volcanic ash.

“At present, the volcanic ash has actually decreased remarkably. However, it is still present in some areas, and we still need one more day to extend the remote learning until tomorrow,” said Pramono at Jakarta City Hall on Monday.

He has also asked the Head of the DKI Jakarta Education Office (Disdik), Nahdiana, to follow up on the matter and promptly issue a Circular Letter (SE).

“I have asked the Head of the Education Office to follow this up, because in Jakarta my statement alone is not enough — there must be a Circular Letter from the Head of the Education Office to regulate the matter,” Pramono explained.

Previously, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government, through its Education Office, implemented Distance Learning (PJJ) for educational institutions in Jakarta starting Monday (7/9) as a precaution against potential volcanic ash exposure.

The policy was set out in Circular Letter Number 91/SE/2026 from the Head of the DKI Jakarta Provincial Education Office concerning Increased Vigilance Against Volcanic Ash, issued on 5 September 2026.

Consequently, the DKI Education Office implemented remote learning for all public and private educational institutions in Jakarta, including early childhood education (PAUD), community learning centres (SKB/PKBM), special needs schools (SLB), primary schools (SD), junior secondary schools (SMP), senior secondary schools (SMA), and vocational schools (SMK).

In addition to implementing remote learning, heads of educational institutions were asked to provide supervision and monitoring of the learning process and to offer alternatives should any obstacles arise.

The DKI Education Office explained that the measure was taken to protect school communities from potential volcanic ash exposure while safeguarding the safety and health of school members, including vulnerable groups.

The implementation of remote learning also serves as an effort to uphold children’s right to educational services whilst there is potential impact from volcanic ash in the Jakarta area.

The policy applies from Monday, 7 September 2026 until further notice from the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government.

Through this policy, the learning process continues, adjusted to conditions and taking into account the safety and health aspects of students and school communities.
