DKI Jakarta legislator urges green space development in densely populated areas
DKI Jakarta Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) member Jamilah Abdul Gani has urged the Jakarta Provincial Government (Pemprov DKI) to increase the construction of green open spaces (RTH) and neighbourhood parks in densely populated areas to improve residents’ quality of life.
Jamilah said the demand for green spaces is one of the most frequent aspirations expressed by residents during her visits to Jakarta’s densely populated residential areas.
“Residents want green spaces, small parks or air parks that are multifunctional. Not only for community activities, but also to provide clean air amidst dense housing,” Jamilah said in Jakarta on Saturday.
She noted that residents in densely populated areas face limited access to public spaces and healthy environments due to cramped living conditions.
Therefore, neighbourhood parks can serve as social interaction hubs and simple recreational spaces for residents.
Jamilah revealed that some residents have proposed that each neighbourhood unit (RW) should have a shared community park.
“She hopes that parks in dense areas can be realised, even in every RW. Residents often tell me that even small plots of land are sufficient for neighbourhood parks,” she said.
Beyond green spaces, she also highlighted several community proposals regarding environmental planning and supporting infrastructure that have yet to be implemented.
She questioned the follow-up on various resident aspirations submitted since 2025, including neighbourhood environmental improvements.
She said local government should be more proactive in visiting the field to see the actual conditions faced by residents, from drainage issues and access roads to public space needs.
“Residents often invite us to their neighbourhoods to show existing problems. This allows us to understand residents’ actual needs and find appropriate solutions,” she said.
Jamilah hopes that the push for green spaces will receive attention from the local government alongside Jakarta’s target to increase RTH coverage.
