DKI Jakarta Government Closes Two Active Disposal Zones at Bantargebang TPST
The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government has closed two active waste disposal zones at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Treatment Plant (TPST) using protective covering media, which will then be fitted with geomembrane as part of the transition towards a controlled landfill system. “The installation of the covering media is a concrete step to reduce odour, help control gas emissions, and minimise the formation of leachate due to rainwater entering the waste pile area,” said Head of the DKI Jakarta Environmental Agency, Dudi Gardesi, in a statement in Jakarta on Monday. The system is implemented by rotating disposal points every seven days. Areas that have been used for waste placement will be covered for seven days, whilst disposal activities are diverted to other prepared points. Dudi added that this measure is part of a comprehensive effort to improve waste management and reduce the environmental impact felt by communities around the Bantargebang TPST. According to him, this mechanism is necessary to maintain the stability of the landfill area whilst improving environmental impact control during the transition period. Dudi stated that the next phase will be reinforced through the gradual installation of geomembrane in the landfill area. This material is used to enhance the protection of the waste pile area and support more optimal leachate management and environmental impact control. “The closure of disposal points using protective media and geomembrane is carried out through collaboration with the private sector using a creative financing mechanism,” said Dudi. According to him, this collaboration allows for accelerated improvements without solely relying on government funding. In the initial stage, Dudi continued, several companies have expressed their commitment to provide support through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes. He noted that business support is an important part of ensuring that material requirements in the field can be met according to technical standards. This collaboration also demonstrates that addressing Jakarta’s waste problem requires joint involvement between the government, businesses, and the community.
