DKI Jakarta Environmental Agency reports positive public response to waste segregation program
The head of DKI Jakarta’s Environmental Agency, Dudi Gardesi Asikin, noted a positive trend in public response and participation two weeks after the household waste segregation program began. ‘We have observed a fairly positive public response and participation in several areas,’ Dudi said in Jakarta on Thursday. He believes that changing public behaviour in waste segregation is crucial for gradually and sustainably reducing the volume of mixed waste entering landfills and the integrated waste disposal site at Bantargebang. He further explained that the initial phase focuses on establishing waste segregation habits among the public. Additionally, the agency is ensuring consistent waste segregation systems from households to neighbourhoods and waste collection officers. ‘According to the implementation timeline, May to June is focused on awareness campaigns, education, and providing supporting infrastructure for waste segregation,’ Dudi explained. Following this phase, waste segregation implementation will be gradually expanded and strengthened across communities. ‘The DKI Jakarta Environmental Agency will continue regular monitoring and evaluation of waste reduction at the source as the program is implemented across communities, areas, and business sectors,’ Dudi added.
