DKI Food Security Agency States That Captured Sailfin Catfish Were Confirmed Dead Before Burial
The DKI Jakarta Food Security, Maritime, and Agriculture Agency (KPKP) has revealed the handling procedure for sailfin catfish captured during cleanup operations in several Jakarta river basins. The fish are confirmed dead before burial. Head of the DKI KPKP, Hasudungan A Sidabalok, stated that this step is taken because sailfin catfish have a high survival capability. “Because the fish have a high ability to survive, they are first confirmed dead before being buried,” Hasudungan said when asked for confirmation on Monday (13/4/2026). He explained that the burial is also carried out in representative locations to prevent the carcasses from being exploited by irresponsible parties. “And efforts are made to bury them in representative locations so that the fish carcasses are not misused,” he said. Hasudungan confirmed that the sailfin catfish caught in the Cideng River, specifically in front of Plaza Indonesia some time ago, have been buried. According to him, the initial plan for the burial site was on land owned by the agency, namely at the Centre for Promotion of Inspection and Certification of Fishery Products in the Ciganjur area. However, because the catch was not too large, the burial was carried out at the nearest location. “We only got a small amount, so it was buried at the nearest location, namely on the banks of the West Canal (BKB) Ciliwung, Kebon Melati, Tanah Abang Subdistrict,” he explained. Previously, the Governor of DKI Jakarta requested that the sailfin catfish cleanup operation be expanded. Following up on this, KPKP is currently consolidating with relevant areas to determine the next operation points. “Yes, we are now preparing with the regions. We will inform the schedule later,” he added.
