DKI Explores Collaboration with San Siro Stadium on JIS Governance
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Jakarta Provincial Government is exploring cooperation with San Siro Stadium in Milan, Italy, including the transformation of Jakarta International Stadium (JIS) governance in aspects such as stadium management, event organisation, and sports tourism promotion.
Jakarta’s Deputy Governor, Rano Karno, stated that Jakarta needs to learn from San Siro’s experience, which functions not only as a match venue but also as a sports tourism destination, creative economy space, entertainment centre, and icon of civic pride.
“We learn how a stadium can thrive as a space for history, business, entertainment, and civic pride. JIS has great potential to develop in that direction,” Rano said in an official statement received in Jakarta on Thursday.
San Siro is one of the world’s football icons, aged 100 years since 1925, and continues to develop with a capacity of 75,000 spectators.
Rano emphasised that San Siro’s experience is important for Jakarta because JIS is designed as strategic infrastructure to support Jakarta’s position as a global city.
He hopes JIS can expand its international network in stadium management, event organisation, sports tourism promotion, and visitor experience content development.
He hopes the collaboration can encompass stadium governance, large-scale event management, optimisation of non-match activities, and visitor experience development so that JIS has activities throughout the year.
Rano, along with the Jakarta delegation, met with San Siro Stadium’s General Manager, Fabrizio Caruso, and Business Development head, Michele Finucci, at San Siro Stadium in Milan, Italy, on Tuesday (12/5), also discussing opportunities for knowledge exchange on international stadium management.
Subsequently, event organisation, stadium museum development, grass cultivation technology, and strategies for building fan engagement in maintaining stadium facilities.
Michele Finucci conveyed that San Siro is open to sharing experiences with Jakarta.
According to him, modern stadiums must be managed not only as match arenas but also as public experience spaces with historical, economic, and emotional value.
The meeting with San Siro also aligns with plans for AC Milan’s arrival in Jakarta on 8 August 2026 to face Chelsea FC in a pre-season match at the Main Stadium of Gelora Bung Karno (SUGBK).
Rano assessed that this plan shows Jakarta has significant appeal as an international football market and a world-class sports event host city.
“Our task is to ensure Jakarta is ready not only as a match host but also as a city capable of delivering a world-class experience,” he said.
