JAKARTA - A member of the DKI Jakarta DPRD from the PDI Perjuangan faction, Hardiyanto Kenneth, has urged the Jakarta Provincial Government to strengthen collaboration with the central government and train operators to enhance the safety of rail-based transportation.

Kenneth’s statement follows the train accident incident involving the Cikarang-bound KRL number PLB 5568A and the KA Argo Bromo Anggrek from Gambir to Surabaya at East Bekasi on Monday night (27/4/2026).

“This must not happen again. Public transportation must be a safe, comfortable space for the public. There must be improved coordination between the central government, local government, and train operators,” Kenneth told Kompas.com on Wednesday (29/4/2026).

“The safety of train passengers must be the top priority. This includes updating signalling technology, improving infrastructure quality, and strengthening operational monitoring systems,” he said.

Kenneth also highlighted the need for a comprehensive evaluation of the railway operational system, including track supervision and route management, which he assessed as still having vulnerable points.

“It is not enough to rely only on post-incident handling. There must be a thorough evaluation from upstream to downstream, including the train journey control system and track supervision,” he stated.

The incident occurred at the East Bekasi Station platform, specifically at KM 28+920.

As a result of the incident, the victims were immediately evacuated to several hospitals in the Bekasi area.

To date, 16 people have been recorded as dead and 90 others injured.

Meanwhile, 240 passengers of the KA Argo Bromo Anggrek were reported to have survived the incident.

Meanwhile, DKI Jakarta Deputy Governor Rano Karno stated that four of the 14 fatalities were DKI Jakarta residents.

“Although one of them is a teacher who lives in Cikarang, I haven’t had time to visit his home but the department head is on the way there,” Rano said.

In addition to assisting at the incident site, the DKI Provincial Government is also ensuring support for the victims’ families, including in the burial process.

After the incident, Rano assessed that a comprehensive evaluation needs to be conducted so that similar incidents do not recur.

“Yes, once again this is a calamity that we cannot avoid, but hopefully it must be evaluated immediately,” Rano said.
