Jakarta (ANTARA) - Commission D of the DKI Jakarta DPRD states that the DKI Provincial Government (Pemprov) is obliged to provide collection bins for sorting waste, particularly in Rukun Warga (RW) areas.

“The Environmental Agency must distribute waste bins per RW before sanctions are implemented. This is the government’s obligation, not the residents’,” said Chair of Commission D DPRD DKI Jakarta Yuke Yurike in Jakarta on Wednesday.

According to her, the waste sorting movement can run maximally if the government provides collection bins, especially at the RW level.

The initial scheme for implementing the waste sorting movement needs to be supported by infrastructure, so that when residents have sorted the waste, they already have a disposal place.

She stated that every RW must have separate waste collection bins, with specific bins for organic and inorganic waste to make the movement effective.

“Don’t socialise all four types of waste at once—organic, inorganic, hazardous (B3), and residual—or residents will be confused. Start with organic first because 55-60% of DKI’s waste is organic,” said Yuke.

Commission D also agreed that waste collection schedules should be separated, to avoid simultaneous collection that would mix the waste in the truck bins.

Previously, DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said that the waste sorting programme from the source is expected to reduce the burden of waste disposal at the Integrated Waste Disposal Site (TPST) Bantargebang.

“Officially, the Jakarta Government is holding waste sorting activities in accordance with the governor’s instructions. And this activity is not half-hearted because it runs simultaneously in all five cities and also in the Thousand Islands to carry out waste sorting,” said Pramono in Jakarta on Sunday (10/5).

According to him, when the waste sorting programme runs effectively, Jakarta’s long-standing waste problems can be handled quickly because if organic and inorganic waste is separated, it can certainly reduce the burden of waste disposal to TPST Bantargebang, and the waste sent there will only be the residual.
