Djuwarto elected council chairman

YOGYAKARTA: A plenary session at the Yogyakarta
provincial legislative council (DPRD DIY) named on Wednesday
Djuwarto, of the Indonesian Democratic Party of
Struggle faction, as chairman of the council.

Djuwarto won 29 votes over rivals Gandung Pardiman of the
Golkar Party faction (who won 13 votes), Istiana of the National
Mandate Party faction (seven) and Agus Sulistyo of the
National Awakening Party (PAN) faction (three).

One of the 55 councillors was absent for health
reasons and of the 54 votes cast on Wednesday, one was
declared invalid and one was an abstention.

The plenary session, which was held almost two hours
later than scheduled, was presided over by temporary
chairman Djuwarto and councillor Basuki Rachmat of PAN.

The session also declared Gandung Pardiman, Istiana and Agus
Sulistyo as deputy chairpersons of the legislative council. -- JP
