DJKA expands Motis Lebaran 2026 programme to the southern Java route
JAKARTA — The Directorate General of Railways (DJKA) of the Ministry of Transportation has expanded the Free Motor Homecoming Programme (Motis) for Lebaran 2026. While previous years served only two routes, this year the government added a new route in the southern Java corridor to accommodate high public interest. DJKA Traffic and Rail Transport Director Arif Anwar said the expansion was due to growing enthusiasm for Motis year after year. ‘Motis in 2026 will have three routes. Usually only two, namely the northern and central routes. This year we are adding the southern route,’ he said in Jakarta on Thursday (5 March 2026). For the northern route, motorcycles are transported by freight train from Jakarta Gudang to Cepu, while passengers can board at several stations along the route. ‘Motis north is from Jakarta Gudang, but passengers can board from Pasar Senen. The route will pass through Cikampek, Cirebon Prujakan, Semarang Tawang, Solo Purwosari, up to Cepu,’ he explained. In addition, DJKA also offers a central route connecting Jakarta Gudang to Lempuyangan station in Yogyakarta. ‘For the central line, from Pasar Senen then via Cikampek, Cirebon Prujakan, Purwokerto, Kebumen, Kutoarjo, up to Lempuyangan,’ Arif said. ‘Motis south is also from Jakarta Gudang, via Cikampek, then to Kiaracondong in Bandung, then Kroya, Kutoarjo, Lempuyangan, up to Madiun. Last year it only went to Lempuyangan; this year we added up to Madiun,’ he added. Arif added that citizens who want to participate in Motis can register online or directly at stations serving the programme. ‘Registration can be done via the website nusantara.kemenhub.go.id or by visiting the Motis-serving stations,’ he said. Under this scheme, the public can send motorcycles by freight train, while the owners travel by passenger train. This mechanism means mudik travellers do not have to undertake long motorcycle journeys on public roads, which carry a high risk of accidents. Motis is also part of the government’s efforts to provide a safer and more comfortable mudik alternative, while reducing traffic accident potential during Lebaran, particularly for motorcycle users.
