The Djarum Group’s step into the large-scale dairy cattle farming business through the megafarm project in Brebes, Central Java, is considered a positive momentum for increasing national milk production. However, behind this potential, small-scale farmers worry about the threat of big corporations dominating and endangering the sustainability of small farmers’ businesses. The Director General of Livestock and Animal Health at the Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan), Agung Suganda, said that the investment in developing dairy cattle by PT Global Dairi Bersama is part of the government’s grand strategy to promote food self-sufficiency, particularly for dairy commodities.
