Djarum Group Leader Michael Bambang Hartono Passes Away
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Djarum Group leader Michael Bambang Hartono passed away on Thursday at 1:15 PM Singapore time. “The extended family of PT Djarum deeply mourns the passing of our leader, Mr Michael Bambang Hartono, on Thursday, 19 March 2026, at 1:15 PM Singapore time,” said Corporate Communication Senior Manager of Djarum Group, Budi Darmawan, when contacted by ANTARA in Jakarta on Thursday. The Djarum Group management is still awaiting information from the family regarding the location of the funeral home and the burial time. “Regarding the information on the funeral home and burial, we are awaiting information from the family,” he said. Michael Bambang Hartono was the leader and owner of the major cigarette company Djarum. He was the son of Oei Wie Gwan, who founded PT Djarum in Kudus, Central Java. After Oei Wie Gwan passed away in 1963, Bambang and his younger brother, Robert Budi Hartono, built the Djarum company into one of the giants whose cigarette products successfully reached various overseas markets. Bambang and Budi are two conglomerates who are included in the list of the richest people in Indonesia. Bambang was also known as one of the major shareholders of the largest private banks in Indonesia and also a national athlete in the sport of bridge.
