DIY Regional Government Confirms No Positive Hantavirus Cases Found in Yogyakarta
The Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY) Government, through the DIY Health Department, has confirmed that no positive hantavirus cases have been found in the DIY area up to early May 2026. However, vigilance is being strengthened through active surveillance, education on Clean and Healthy Living Habits (PHBS), and rodent population control as efforts to prevent the potential transmission of this zoonotic disease.
The Head of the DIY Health Department, Gregorius Anung Trihadi, stated that the first hantavirus case in DIY was detected in 2025 through routine sentinel surveillance as part of the early warning system. At that time, six positive cases were found spread across Sleman Regency, Bantul Regency, and Yogyakarta City. All patients were declared recovered with no cases of death or further transmission.
βIn 2026 up to now, there have been no reports of positive hantavirus cases from the results of routine sentinel surveillance examined in the laboratory. Nevertheless, we are still increasing vigilance and active monitoring together with district/city health departments,β Anung explained.
Based on data from the DIY Health Department, the six positive hantavirus cases in 2025 consisted of three cases in Sleman Regency, two cases in Bantul Regency, and one case in Yogyakarta City. In Sleman, the cases were found in Sleman Subdistrict, Mlati Subdistrict, and Kalasan Subdistrict.
