DIY Regional Government Arranges Assistance for NTT Students Affected by Disaster

The DIY regional government is arranging tuition fee relief for students from East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) affected by the earthquake disaster who are studying in DIY. In addition, the DIY regional government is also providing basic food assistance to NTT students in DIY.

Governor of DIY, Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X, said the government is also considering the fate of NTT students in Jogja who are still studying. This was conveyed by the Sultan during a symbolic handover of assistance at the Kepatihan Complex in Jogja City on Wednesday (19/8/2026).

The Sultan has issued a Circular (SE) to universities to collect data on NTT students affected by the disaster, including students whose families experienced house damage or economic difficulties due to the disaster.

“We will discuss living costs and obtaining easier access so they can continue their education there. We always do the same thing,” said the Sultan at the Kepatihan Complex.

“It is just that we do not yet know exactly who has been affected, how many there are, whose parents may not be able to send money for living costs in Jogja,” he continued.

DIY Regional Secretary Ni Made Dwipanti Indrayanti added that the mechanism for tuition fee relief assistance for NTT students will also be left to the policies of each university.

“For the verification process, we fully entrust it to each university. Policies regarding the form of education fee relief are also left to each university,” explained Made.

In addition, the DIY regional government has also prepared food assistance for NTT students living in student dormitories in Jogja, in the form of 405 kilograms of rice per month, eggs, and instant noodles until December 2026.

“So we are not only helping the people in NTT a little, but we also see that many students are seeking education in DIY. So, we will also help a little with their food needs,” explained Made.

“There is assistance through the DIY Agriculture and Food Security Agency in the form of rice, which will be 405 kilograms per month, eggs, and other food supplements,” she added.

In addition to assistance for NTT students in Jogja, the DIY regional government is also distributing aid to communities in NTT affected by the earthquake disaster.

The assistance includes emergency response support, health assistance, and humanitarian donations. Among them is emergency response financial assistance of Rp 1 billion which will be distributed through a direct transfer mechanism to the NTT Provincial Government.

“The DIY regional government will provide assistance of Rp 1 billion to the NTT Provincial Government to support the handling of communities affected by the disaster. We will transfer it directly because it is in accordance with the existing mechanism,” explained Made.

Then there is assistance of Rp 90 million from the financial services sector in DIY collected by Bank Indonesia, OJK, FKIJK, and BPD DIY which is distributed through Baznas to affected communities. There is also an initial donation from DIY regional government civil servants of Rp 10 million handed over to Baznas.

“All of this assistance will be centralised through Baznas, which will later distribute it according to its designation,” said Made.

In addition, medicines and health supplies worth Rp 38,484,610 in the form of paracetamol, paracetamol syrup, multivitamins, vitamin B complex, ibuprofen, antacids, cetirizine, infusion fluids, medical gloves, and masks.

The DIY regional government is also collaborating with the Muhammadiyah Disaster Management Center (MDMC), the Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing (FK-KMK) UGM, JNE, and the Yakkum Emergency Unit (YEU) to distribute the assistance to NTT.

According to detikNews, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake occurred in NTT on Saturday (15/8) morning at 04.58.24 WIB. Based on updated information, the epicentre was at sea, about 38 kilometres northeast of Mbay, Nagekeo Regency, NTT.

The epicentre was at a depth of 15 km. A tsunami occurred at 10 points from NTT to South Sulawesi. Hundreds of aftershocks occurred.
