DIY Provincial Government Investigates Wastewater Channel Explosion at Malioboro Terrace
The investigation into the cause of the wastewater channel explosion at Teras Malioboro in Yogyakarta City is being handled by the DIY Department of Cooperatives and SMEs (DinkopUKM), which oversees Teras Malioboro. The police line has been removed from the incident site. Head of the Integrated Business Service Agency for KUMKM Teras Malioboro at DinkopUKM DIY, Wisnu Hermawan, stated that this handover of the investigation follows the police’s decision not to proceed with legal processes. “The police have already handed over the investigation process because the victims have stated that there was no element of intent and have accepted the case,” Wisnu said when contacted by reporters on Tuesday (31/3/2026). “We have been asked to handle it promptly in a sustainable and measured manner, taking into account technical feasibility,” he added. Wisnu said that his team will gradually conduct a comprehensive investigative audit of the construction structure. Repairs will also be carried out as soon as possible and are targeted to be completed this week. “The police team has opened the police line. The investigation is being conducted by us; we will check everything thoroughly. We will make modifications to whatever needs it so that such cases do not happen again in the future,” he explained. Although the police line has been removed, the area is still being cleared during the audit and repair process. Traders around the explosion site will be temporarily relocated. “Relocation to the empty spaces on the sides, just shifted. Only three traders, because the damage is not too extensive,” Wisnu said. “We will sterilise the area first. The area is not much different from the previous police line; the important thing is that visitor access is still available, and the tenants are not inconvenienced,” he continued. Previously reported, the wastewater channel at Teras Malioboro in Yogyakarta City exploded on Wednesday (30/3) around 07:20 WIB. Three tourists were injured in the incident. Police conducted an examination to find the cause of the explosion. “(The explosion happened) earlier when the tenants were preparing to sell. Although the atmosphere was still quite quiet, there were three visitors who became victims of this extraordinary incident,” Wisnu said when met at Teras Malioboro on Monday (30/3). The Teras Malioboro management immediately took the victims to RSUP Dr Sardjito. Wisnu said the three victims were from one family. His side covered all treatment and service costs for the victims. “The tourists from East Java suffered burns between 2% and 5%. They have now been discharged from the hospital and their condition has recovered,” Wisnu explained. “They have returned from the hospital to the hotel because the burns, as assessed by medical staff at RSUP Dr Sardjito, are in the outpatient category, so no inpatient care is needed,” he added.
