DIY Police: GMS Bantul Temporarily Suspends Religious Activities Until All Permits Obtained

The Yogyakarta Regional Police (Polda DIY) stated that Gereja Misi Sejahtera (GMS) in Bantul has agreed to temporarily cease religious activities until all necessary permits for the establishment and operation of the place of worship are completed. The decision followed mediation between Polda DIY, Bantul Regency Government, and relevant stakeholders after clashes erupted during GMS’s inaugural mass in Glugo, Panggungharjo, Sewon, Bantul, on Sunday, 24 May 2026.

Polda DIY’s Head of Public Relations, Commissioner Ihsan, explained that the issue was reportedly triggered by incomplete documentation for the religious facility’s permits, which drew protests from the Front Jihad Islam (FJI) group. “Both parties have agreed to the mediation demands to uphold and respect the noble values of mutual respect and tolerance that have been well-established,” Ihsan said on Tuesday, 26 May.

Ihsan added that during the incident, the Bantul Police Chief personally oversaw security at the scene to mitigate the conflict. Mediation was conducted between FJI representative Darohman and GMS representatives led by Pastor Yosep Moro Wijaya.

While emphasising the importance of compliance with regulations, Polda DIY affirmed that freedom of worship is a constitutional right. Ihsan stated that any form of unilateral intimidation by any group is legally unacceptable. “Polda DIY will not tolerate any acts of intolerance, intimidation, or unilateral actions by community groups that disrupt public order,” he stressed.

The situation at the incident site is currently under control and conducive. The public is urged to remain calm, avoid being provoked by negative narratives on social media, and leave the resolution of the matter to law enforcement and local authorities. (AU/I-1)
