DIY Police Confirm Intel Officer Detained by UMY Students on Campus Is Their Member
YOGYAKARTA - Polda DIY has addressed the viral incident in which a man suspected of being a police intelligence officer was detained by students on the campus of Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta (UMY) on Wednesday (17/6/2026). Polda DIY Head of Public Relations, Commissioner Ihsan, acknowledged that the man briefly held by students was a member of Polda DIY carrying out security and service duties for a public expression of opinion.
According to Ihsan, the personnel was part of a team that received an official order to escort a student demonstration. His presence on campus was described as part of monitoring to ensure the protesters returned to campus safely after staging a demonstration at the Yogyakarta Zero Kilometre Point area.
“Members at the location, whether in uniform or plainclothes, are part of the service implementation to escort and ensure the protest participants return to campus in a safe and secure condition,” Ihsan said on Thursday (18/6/2026).
Ihsan explained that the police presence during the expression of opinion was a form of service to guarantee the public’s right to voice their aspirations while maintaining security and order during the activity. Regarding the incident that made students suspicious and led to the member’s detention, Ihsan stated that a misunderstanding had occurred. However, the matter was resolved humanely through communication and coordination between the police, the rectorate, and the students.
“The current situation is conducive. We express our gratitude to the rectorate and students for the excellent communication and coordination, which allowed this misunderstanding to be resolved properly, and our member has returned to Polda,” he said.
