Disturbing Discovery of Used Contraceptives Scattered Across Rendang Field in Karangasem

A number of residents and traders have been unsettled by the discovery of contraceptives scattered around the Werdi Yowana field in Rendang Village, Karangasem, Bali. The used contraceptives, specifically condoms, were found near vendor stalls and in the vicinity of a sacred shrine (pelinggih).

The Village Head of Rendang, I Nengah Kariasa, confirmed the findings, stating that residents have discovered these items at the location on several occasions. “The contraceptives were found in the corners of stalls by traders. Not only wrappers, but several used contraceptives were also found in various corners of the field,” Kariess said on Friday (31/07/2026).

According to Kariasa, the vendor area tends to become quiet at night. He also admitted that contraceptives had been found near the sacred shrine within the field area. “Previously, they were also found near the shrine. I do not know whether they were used there or simply discarded,” Kariasa added.

Kariasa emphasised that supervision will be tightened through intensified inter-agency patrols involving local authorities. He expressed hope that such incidents would not recur. “We also plan to impose traditional sanctions if the perpetrators are identified, requiring them to perform a purification ceremony,” he concluded.
