The Ministry of Religious Affairs will conduct hilal (crescent moon) observation (rukyatul hilal) to determine the start of Ramadan 1447 Hijriah on Tuesday, 17 February 2026. The observation will be carried out simultaneously across 96 locations spread throughout various regions in Indonesia.

Director General of Islamic Community Guidance at the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Abu Rokhmad, said the results of the hilal observation would be discussed together during the isbat (official determination) session for the start of Ramadan 1447 H on the same day. According to him, the isbat session will reconcile hisab (astronomical calculation) data with the results of the rukyatul hilal.

“The government is striving to ensure the determination of the start of Ramadan is conducted scientifically, transparently, and involves all relevant parties,” he said, as reported on the MUI website on Monday, 16 February 2026.

He explained that based on hisab calculations, the ijtimak (conjunction) preceding Ramadan this year will occur at 19:01 WIB on Tuesday, 17 February 2026. For the day to be declared as having entered Ramadan, he said, the position of the hilal at sunset must be below the horizon with an altitude ranging from -2° 24 minutes 42 seconds to -0° 58 minutes 47 seconds, and an elongation angle of 0° 56 minutes 23 seconds to 1° 53 minutes 36 seconds.

To complement the hisab data, the Ministry of Religious Affairs will carry out rukyatul hilal at 96 locations spread across Indonesia. The observations will be conducted by officers from the provincial offices of the Ministry of Religious Affairs and district/city offices, in cooperation with Religious Courts, Islamic organisations, and various other relevant institutions.

Abu Rokhmad added that the observation results from all these points would serve as the primary material for discussion in the isbat session. The final decision on the determination of 1 Ramadan 1447 H will be officially announced after the session concludes, through a press conference following the proceedings.
