JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Secretary General of Demokrat, Herman Khaeron, believes that the discussion on revising the Election Law still has a long timeframe because the elections will only be held in 2029.

According to him, the stages of the general election typically begin around one and a half years before voting day. Therefore, the discussion of regulations is considered to still be possible in the coming years.

“The time is still sufficient. The time is still quite long, the 2029 elections,” said Herman when met at the DPR RI Building, Thursday (16/4/2026).

“Well, with preparations, say two years. 2029, so actually 2027,” he continued.

Several crucial issues have even begun to be discussed among political parties. One of them concerns the parliamentary threshold.

“For example, with the parliamentary threshold limit. How much this needs to be discussed, of course, the issues and opinions have already developed, some say 5 percent, 6 percent, some set choices according to the Constitutional Court ruling,” said Herman.

“Then regarding the magnitude of electoral districts, for example, or 4 to 6, 4 to 8, or remaining 4 to 10,” he stated.

Herman added that various options would later be officially decided by the factions in the DPR in discussion forums, whether through a special committee (pansus), the Legislation Body, or a working committee in Commission II.

“Of course, these are choices that will later be formally determined by the factions, whether in the Special Committee, or discussed in the Legislation Body, or perhaps discussed in the Working Committee in Commission II. We’ll just wait,” he said.

“The opinions should indeed be directed towards how to achieve efficiency in the election budget, then effectiveness, fairness, and it should not leave the middle and lower levels as if they have to be abandoned,” said Herman.

In addition, Herman reminded that discussions regarding election organisers are also important to be carried out soon.

Especially regarding the recruitment of commissioners for the General Elections Commission (KPU), the Election Supervisory Body (Bawaslu), and the Election Organisers Honour Council (DKPP).
