Discussing the Judges' Positions Bill, Chairman of Commission III Ensures Security and Welfare for Judges

JAKARTA - The Chairman of DPR Commission III, Habiburokhman, has assured that judges in Indonesia can carry out their duties to the fullest extent. This was stated during a public hearing (RDPU) discussing the Judges’ Positions Bill (RUU Jabatan Hakim) on Tuesday (31/3/2026). “We are very concerned that those in judicial positions, including judges and their support teams, can maximally perform their respective duties. Because their welfare is fulfilled, because their security is maintained,” said Habiburokhman during the RDPU, quoted from the YouTube broadcast of TVR Parlemen, on Tuesday. In the RDPU, Habiburokhman ensured that Commission III gathered various aspirations from parties within the judicial environment. “We want to maximise this Act to address the complaints so far from our colleagues, yes. What are the complaints so far in carrying out duties, we will formulate them in the Judges’ Positions Act,” said Habiburokhman. The first is the change in judges’ status from civil servants to state officials. Second, the Supreme Court (MA) conducts independent recruitment of judges, except for supreme judges. Third, consolidation of regulations related to judges’ positions in four judicial environments. Fourth, expansion of the concept of security guarantees not only for judges but also including their family members. “So that it is then more clearly regulated within the framework of an act,” said Bayu in the hearing meeting (RDP), on Wednesday (21/1/2026). The sixth is the extension of judges’ retirement age, namely first-instance judges (67 years), high court judges (70 years), supreme judges (75 years). Finally, the appointment of first-instance judges through formation and allocation of needs, education, and determination.
