Discovery of Helmet and Container Provides Initial Lead in Acid Attack on Andrie Yunus
JAKARTA — The discovery of a helmet and container near the crime scene of the caustic acid attack on Andrie Yunus, Deputy Coordinator of KontraS, has provided police with an opportunity to identify the four perpetrators.
Metro Central Jakarta Police Chief Kombes Pol Reynold Hutagalung stated that the helmet was discovered by a local community policing officer whilst searching the location of the incident.
“We are attempting to create a sketch of the crime scene based on directional sightlines from north, south, west and east,” Reynold said at a press conference at Metro Jaya Police Headquarters on Monday (16 March 2026).
Police have currently obtained 2,610 CCTV video recordings with a total duration of 10,320 minutes. The footage comes from 86 CCTV cameras distributed along the route travelled by the four perpetrators.
From this CCTV footage, it was determined that the perpetrators consisted of more than the two individuals shown in videos circulating on social media.
Director of General Criminal Investigation for Metro Jaya Police Kombes Pol Iman Imanudin stated that there were four perpetrators who were operating motorcycles.
However, only one motorcycle carried the caustic acid, which was subsequently poured on the victim.
“One person carried out the attack, whilst another may have been keeping watch,” Iman said.
Regarding the discovery of the helmet and container, police are now attempting to identify the perpetrators by searching for fingerprints and DNA through forensic examination.
Previously, it was reported that Andrie Yunus, Deputy Coordinator of KontraS, was attacked with caustic acid by unidentified individuals on Thursday evening.
KontraS Executive Board Coordinator Dimas Bagus Arya stated that the incident occurred at 23:37 Western Indonesian Time whilst Andrie Yunus was riding a motorcycle on Jalan Salemba I-Talang, Senen, Central Jakarta.
Whilst passing the location, two perpetrators operating a motorcycle, believed to be a Honda Beat model manufactured between 2016 and 2021, approached the victim from the opposite direction on Jalan Talang (Talang Bridge).
The first perpetrator, who was acting as the driver, wore a white-blue combination T-shirt, dark-coloured trousers believed to be made of denim, and a black helmet.
Meanwhile, the second perpetrator, who was sitting at the rear, wore a face covering or black mask resembling a buff that covered half of the face, a dark blue T-shirt, and long blue trousers rolled up to a short length and believed to be made of denim.
One of the perpetrators subsequently poured caustic acid in the direction of the victim, striking part of the victim’s body.
Andrie sustained burns on his right and left hands, face, chest, and eyes.
