Discovery in China Alters the Long History of Human Civilisation

A team of researchers has unveiled the discovery of a new species believed to be one of the ancestors of modern humans. They have named the species Homo juluensis, which means ‘big head’, based on fossil findings in the Xujiayao region of northern China. In a study published in May 2024, Christopher Bae from the University of Hawai’i and Xiuju Wu from the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology identified a collection of hominin fossils with unusual characteristics. The fossils feature large, wide skulls, with traits described as similar to Neanderthals, along with characteristics resembling both modern humans and Denisovans. ‘This fossil represents a new form of large-brained hominin (Juluren) that was widespread across much of eastern Asia during the late Quaternary (300,000 to 500,000 years ago),’ the study stated. Homo juluensis dates from 220,000 to 100,000 years ago. The study by Bae and Wu is not the first discovery of its kind. A similar finding was previously revealed in 1974 at Xujiayao, where 10,000 new artefacts and 21 hominin fossil fragments representing 10 different individuals were uncovered. The features found at that time match those described by Bae and Wu, including large brains and thick skulls, bearing similarities to Neanderthals. This resemblance is likely because H. juluensis was not genetically isolated. The species is the result of interbreeding among several other hominins from the Middle Pleistocene, including Neanderthals. ‘They represent a new hominin population for the region; juluren means large-headed people,’ the researchers wrote. They also explained the need for a new terminology for ancient Homo species, proposing a division into four distinct species: H. floresiensis, H. luzonensis, H. longi, and H. juluensis.
