Discord is reported to have introduced end-to-end encryption for all calls, whether voice or video. With this encryption, all interactions on the social media platform are truly private or prioritising users’ privacy. Engadget reported on Tuesday, 19 May local time, that the step undertaken by Discord was announced after the company completed years-long efforts to implement this encryption for its service. The security is applied to all calls outside private channels and applies automatically, meaning users do not need to opt in to enable additional protection. End-to-end encryption is, in fact, widely used by digital platforms to safeguard user privacy in communications features. However, in recent times some platforms have started removing this encryption. The latest is Meta, which removed end-to-end encryption from the Direct Message feature on Instagram from 8 May 2026. This applies globally and means the platform can see conversations between users. In addition to Meta, there is also TikTok, which openly did not implement this encryption in its direct message feature from the outset, arguing that it facilitates tracking of communications if legal cases involving the platform arise. Yet, Discord is not alone. This is because there are other digital platforms that prioritise privacy by applying end-to-end encryption in their services. For example, Apple encrypts RCS messages, providing more privacy when users on iOS and Android chat.
