Disco fire death toll likely to rise
MANILA (Reuter): The death toll from a Manila disco fire is
likely to rise as the Philippines launched a crackdown against
nightclubs with inadequate fire exits, officials said yesterday.
At least 151 young revelers died in the fire which struck the
Ozone disco after midnight on Tuesday.
At least 11 people were in serious condition in three
hospitals.
"It does not look good because of the burns all over their
bodies," said a doctor in one of the hospitals.
Police in Manila's Quezon district where the disaster occurred
shut down four disco houses late on Wednesday because they lacked
adequate fire exits and emergency lights.
