Discipline Seen as Key to Preserving Hajj Virtue After Pilgrimage

Hajj pilgrims have been reminded to always preserve the values of a virtuous pilgrimage (mabrur) after returning to Indonesia. One of the main keys to maintaining this virtue is discipline in performing worship and daily life. Anis Diyah Puspita, Head of the Worship Guidance Section for the Hajj Organising Committee (PPIH) at the Airport Working Area (Daker), cited the discipline of observing the five daily prayers, a habit cultivated while in the Holy Land. “So, maintaining our discipline in worship, which perhaps we were not yet accustomed to safeguarding the five daily prayers, at least we should maintain it,” Anis told Media Center Haji (MCH) reporters while escorting the departure of pilgrims from flight group YIA 12 at Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Madinah, Saudi Arabia, on Tuesday (16/6/2026).

Anis stated that the values acquired during the Hajj pilgrimage must also be brought back to Indonesia. She mentioned patience, equality, solidarity, care, and humility as part of the important lessons learned during the Hajj procession. According to her, the experience of gathering at Arafah in identical clothing teaches that all humans have equal standing before God. “That we are all in the same clothing, gathered in the same place, without any differences in social status, position, and so forth; we are equal before God,” she said.

Furthermore, Anis stressed the importance of eliminating arrogance and feelings of superiority over others after returning to the community. She hopes the spiritual experience during Hajj can shape a better character in social life. According to her, the value of equality learned in the Holy Land must be reflected in community life in Indonesia. “Hopefully we can bring this back to Indonesia, so that within society there is no more arrogance, no more feeling high and mighty,” she said. Anis also assessed that the entire series of Hajj rituals contains lessons about discipline. She explained that every pillar and stage of Hajj is carried out with clear rules, thereby teaching compliance with applicable provisions. Therefore, she hopes this spirit of discipline will continue to be applied upon returning to the workplace and community life.
