Discarding Old Mobile Phones Can Earn Free Internet Data, Here Is How
Citizens can obtain bonus internet data by disposing of electronic waste (e-waste) through the ByeByeBox programme. This initiative enables users to exchange unused electronic devices for free main data quotas.
The programme is a collaboration between XLSmart and Remind via ByeByeBox, Indonesia’s first E-Waste Reverse Vending Machine. The machine is designed to make it easier for the public to surrender old electronic devices, including used mobile phones, to a more responsible management stream, while simultaneously encouraging circular e-waste management habits.
Activation began with the launch of ByeByeBox at the ITB East Hall on 14 September and will continue within the campus area until 28 September 2026. During the activation period at ITB, users of XL, AXIS, and Smartfren can obtain bonus main data based on the weight of the electronic waste collected.
Specifically, e-waste weighing under 1 kg receives a 500 MB bonus, e-waste weighing between 1-2 kg receives 1 GB, while e-waste weighing over 2 kg receives 1.5 GB. The bonus quota is valid for one day. Meanwhile, participants who do not currently use XL, AXIS, or Smartfren also have the opportunity to receive a starter SIM card during the activation period.
How to Dispose of Electronic Waste at ByeByeBox
Members of the public wishing to participate in this programme simply need to bring small, unused electronic devices to the ByeByeBox machine. The steps are as follows:
Bring small, unused electronic devices to the available ByeByeBox at the activation area.
Enter personal details or scan a barcode if already logged into the Remind Go application.
Take a photo with the electronic items intended for disposal in front of the ByeByeBox.
Insert the electronic devices into the machine.
The ByeByeBox will then validate the items using cameras and Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology.
The machine will automatically weigh the electronic waste.
The received devices are then recorded in the Remind system to enter the e-waste management stream.
Once the device has been successfully recorded, users can redeem their quota via their registered email, or receive a starter SIM card through available outlets near the ByeByeBox, which will subsequently be sent as an eSIM to the registered email.
