Disasters claim seven lives

PURWOKERTO, Central Java: Five people were killed in three separate sea accidents, while two others were buried alive in a landslide. All occurred on Saturday.

Rianto and Sarwono, both students from Bandung, West Java, were caught by huge waves at the Jatimalang beach and drowned. Kristanto and Suryono, residents of Kutawinangun, Central Java, died in a similar accident at Ambal beach, Kebumen district, while Warisman was killed at Srandil beach, Cilacap district.

Chief of the local rescue team Atas Munandar has called on the public not to go swimming at any beaches in the region, as some waves are up to five meters.

Meanwhile, Gunawan, 25, and Mrs. Warkisah, 65, were buried alive in a landslide which occurred in Boja village, Cilacap following incessant rain since Thursday. (wah/16)
