Disaster Strikes Indonesia: Forest Fires and Drought Spread Across Regions

The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has reported a series of forest and land fires (karhutla) and drought conditions affecting several regions across Indonesia. In West Java, a fire in Sumedang Regency on Tuesday burned approximately three hectares of land in Cinanjung Village, Tanjungsari District, before being extinguished by a joint team. In Aceh Province, a land fire in West Aceh Regency has consumed 13 hectares, with smoke still visible and cooling operations ongoing. Meanwhile, in Southwest Papua Province, a fire in Sorong City scorched 24 hectares and damaged an electricity pole, temporarily cutting power to residents in Matalamagi Village, North Sorong District, before being fully extinguished.

Drought conditions are also impacting communities, with the Lamongan Regency Disaster Management Agency distributing clean water to five locations in Walangkopo Hamlet, Kedungkumpul Village, to serve 150 families or approximately 600 people. The BNPB is calling on local governments and the public to remain vigilant, urging people to avoid clearing land by burning, increase patrols in fire-prone areas, and ensure access to water sources for early response. Residents are also advised to use water wisely and monitor official information from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) and local disaster agencies.
