Disaster Relief Task Force: 1,872 Families Still in Evacuation Tents in Sumatra, Numbers Continue to Decline
The Post-Disaster Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Task Force (PRR) for the Sumatra disaster reported that 1,872 families remain in evacuation tents, a decrease of 428 families over the past two days.
“Currently, there are 1,872 families (kartu keluarga) still in evacuation tents and this has decreased by 428 families over the past two days,” said Amran, spokesman for the Post-Disaster Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Task Force for Sumatra, at the Ministry of Home Affairs office in Central Jakarta on Monday (9 March 2026).
Amran detailed the declining number of evacuees in Aceh Province. According to him, there are currently 1,695 families, down from the previous figure of 2,099 families.
“Two days ago, specifically in Aceh, from 2,099 families, there are now 1,695 families remaining. So there has been a reduction of 404 families who have transitioned to temporary housing (huntara),” he said.
Amran stated that evacuees in North Sumatra number 177 families, with 24 families having left the evacuation centres.
“In North Sumatra Province, from two days ago when there were 201 families, today there are 177 families, a reduction of 24 families,” he said.
Amran said the government continues to work towards further reducing the number of people in evacuation tents before Eid al-Fitr. He expressed optimism that evacuees would soon be able to move into temporary housing.
“We hope that this trend will continue to decline through to the upcoming Eid al-Fitr celebrations, so we are optimistic that all these evacuees will continue to decrease and move into temporary housing, and we will not see evacuees remaining in tents,” he said.
