Disaster reduction campaign on a roll

JAKARTA: The Indonesian Disaster Mitigation Society (MPBI) is
organizing a series of activities to commemorate International
Day for Disaster Reduction this week.

A symposium on micro finance will be held in Jakarta on
Wednesday, followed by a discussion on a draft bylaw on disaster
mitigation in Yogyakarta on Thursday and a discussion on a draft
law on disaster mitigation at the Indonesian Red Cross office in
Jakarta on Saturday.

Another workshop and seminar on the military's role in
disaster control and the social impact of the bird flu outbreak
next week will cap the campaign.

The UN has since 2001 dedicated the second week of October as
International Day for Disaster Reduction commemoration. -- JP
