Disarm GAM

It is correct for many circles, including the political elite,
religious leaders and social figures to perceive or even propose
that the Acehnese separatists who joined the Free Aceh Movement
(GAM) must be disarmed. If the Aceh issue is not dealt with
quickly, more and more people will become victims.

In this context, I would like to call on the government to be
highly sensitive to the people's aspirations and to order
immediately the military and the police to disarm GAM members.

The use of firearms must be in compliance with the existing
regulations and laws, i.e. special permits should be possessed by
the users. Besides, their Indonesian military uniforms must also
be removed so that they cannot misuse them as camouflage from the
military proper.

Remember, with AK-47 automatic rifles and hand grenades, GAM
openly attacked mobile brigade members who were riding on a
truck, killing some of them. So speedy follow-up measures must be
taken to prevent similar incidents.
