Disabled Graduate's Reflections at UMJ: Campus Provides Space for Unlimited Development
Jakarta — Danka Rahmadinah Talogo, a graduate from the Faculty of Agriculture at Muhammadiyah University of Jakarta (UMJ), delivered an emotional and inspirational message representing all graduating students during the Open Senate Meeting for UMJ’s Period I Session 2 of 2026 Convocation, held at the KH. Azhar Basyir Auditorium, Cendekia Building, on Saturday (23 May 2026).
In her address, Danka reflected on her academic journey at UMJ, describing the institution not merely as a place to acquire knowledge, but as a space to learn about struggle, solidarity, collaboration, and personal growth.
“Muhammadiyah University of Jakarta is not only a place to acquire knowledge, but also a place for us to learn about struggle, solidarity, collaboration, and how to develop into better individuals,” she stated.
Danka emphasised that UMJ is a campus that provides opportunities for anyone to develop without regard to background or limitations. She admitted feeling anxious when she first decided to study at UMJ, particularly concerning potential discrimination and judgement based on physical appearance. However, her actual experience proved the opposite.
“I experienced an environment that is accepting, appreciative, and views a person not from their shortcomings, but from the abilities and potential they possess,” she affirmed.
According to Danka, UMJ provided a sense of safety, comfort, and ample opportunity for development through various academic and non-academic activities.
During the occasion, Danka expressed respect and gratitude to the university’s leadership, lecturers, education staff, and the entire UMJ academic community for supporting students throughout their educational journey to graduation.
“Thank you for the knowledge, patience, attention, and valuable experiences you have provided to us,” she said. She valued the dedication of educators and all campus stakeholders as crucial in shaping student character and future prospects.
In closing her address, Danka encouraged all graduating students to continue learning, developing, and maintaining their alma mater’s reputation wherever they go. She emphasised that graduation is not the end of a journey, but the beginning of a new chapter in life.
“I hope that henceforth we remain humble individuals, continue to learn and develop, and are able to benefit others, whilst never forgetting to uphold the reputation of our alma mater, Muhammadiyah University of Jakarta, wherever we may be,” she concluded.
