Directorate General of Corrections carries out mass prisoner relocation in Jambi and Bagansiapiapi

The Directorate General of Corrections (Ditjenpas) under the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections has conducted a mass relocation of prisoners from Jambi Prison and Bagansiapiapi Prison in Riau to new facilities with greater capacity.

Ditjenpas Spokesperson Rika Aprianto, confirmed in Jakarta on Sunday, explained that 1,553 inmates from the Class IIA Jambi Prison and 990 inmates from the Class II Bagansiapiapi Prison, Riau, were relocated.

“This relocation is part of an effort to improve the quality of rehabilitation and security in Jambi and Bagansiapiapi prisons,” said Rika.

“The old Jambi prison is highly vulnerable to flooding, which has the potential to disrupt rehabilitation programmes, maintenance, and pose risks to security and order.”

Meanwhile, the old Bagansiapiapi prison had a capacity of only 98 people. The new prison, located in Ujung Tanjung, Rokan Hilir Regency, has a capacity for 1,500 people.

“The occupancy capacity of the new Bagansiapiapi prison is much larger than the previous capacity. The previous facility was experiencing overcrowding of up to 1,000 per cent,” she added.

The relocation for Bagansiapiapi prison took place on Thursday (4/6), while the Jambi prison relocation occurred on Saturday (6/6).

“The relocation process for prisoners from Jambi and Bagansiapiapi prisons was carried out safely with zero incidents, thanks to the solid synergy between the Ditpamintel Team, the Riau Regional Office, Bagansiapiapi Prison, and the TNI-Polri ranks,” said Rika.
