Director General of Dukcapil: Photocopying e-KTP Violates Personal Data Protection
JAKARTA - The Director General of Population and Civil Registration at the Ministry of Home Affairs, Teguh Setyabudi, has reminded the public that duplicating or photocopying e-KTPs could potentially violate regulations. “In fact, the e-KTP no longer needs to be photocopied, as that is actually a violation of PDP (Personal Data Protection),” said Teguh in Depok City, West Java, on Wednesday (6/5/2026). Article 65 of the PDP Law prohibits individuals from unlawfully disseminating personal data, including NIK and KTP information that does not belong to them. There is also Article 67, which stipulates criminal penalties for the misuse of personal data in the form of imprisonment for five years or a fine of Rp 5 billion. “The e-KTP is equipped with sophisticated technology, a chip. That chip contains the data. In fact, the e-KTP no longer needs to be photocopied,” said Teguh. He revealed that e-KTPs can be read using a special device known as a card reader. “In fact, to read the e-KTP, there is a device—a card reader for reading it. Thus, it no longer needs to be photocopied,” Teguh explained.
