Diponegoro gets new chief
SEMARANG: Army chief of staff Gen. R. Hartono yesterday installed Maj. Gen. Yusuf Kartanegara as the new chief of the Diponegoro Military Command which oversees security in Central Java and Yogyakarta.
Yusuf, who was formerly Chief of Staff of the Jakarta Garrison, replaced Lt. Gen. Soeyono, who was last month promoted to become chief of the Armed Forces' General Affairs.
The Diponegoro post is considered one of the most prestigious in the Army and one which in the past has helped launch many officers into higher positions in the military and the government.
With the completion of the transfer of duty, Soeyono will no longer have to shuttle between Jakarta and Semarang as he has been doing over the past month due to holding two jobs at the same time.
The ceremony yesterday was also used to mark the command's 45th anniversary which fell on March 1.
Among those attending the ceremony included Lt. Gen. (ret.) Soegiarto, Lt. Gen, (ret.) Harsudiyono Hartas and Lt. Gen. (ret.) Ismail and Central Java Governor Soewardi. (har)
