Diponegoro drops 250 students

SEMARANG: The state-run Diponegoro University is expelling 250
students for failing to complete their studies within the
permitted time.

"The university has given them a chance to re-register but
even then they did not take advantage of the offer," Sunarto, the
university spokesman, said.

As many as 800 students had exceeded the allocated time to
complete their studies, but only 550 took up the offer for re-
registration by the March 31 deadline, Antara reported.

Rector Muladi said earlier that he had been warned by the
Ministry of Education and Culture in Jakarta about the large
number of students at the college who did not complete their
studies within the allotted time. "This is not fair to others
because these students are receiving government subsidies," he
said. (emb)
