Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Danantara Investment Management (DIM) Pandu Sjahrir has stated that designating Waste-to-Energy (WtE) or Pengolahan Sampah menjadi Energi Listrik (PSEL) projects as National Strategic Projects (PSN) reflects the government’s seriousness in tackling the increasingly complex waste problem. Numerous final disposal sites (TPA) across various regions are facing capacity constraints, including those still using open dumping systems. This condition not only causes environmental pollution and health issues but also increases methane gas emissions from decomposing waste. “Through Denera (PT Daya Energi Bersih Nusantara), we aim to help accelerate the realisation of a Waste-to-Energy ecosystem that can be part of a long-term solution to Indonesia’s waste management challenges. The PSN designation for the three first-wave locations shows the government’s commitment to delivering an integrated solution to the waste crisis. This initiative encompasses improving the waste management system, reducing dependency on landfills, and optimising the utilisation of waste into energy,” Pandu said in a statement in Jakarta on Saturday. He previously mentioned that Denera has the potential to become one of the largest Waste-to-Energy companies in the world. “This could be a good catalyst if we can list on the Indonesia Stock Exchange; we will apply later,” Pandu said. The PSN status was granted through a National Strategic Project Certificate issued by the Committee for the Acceleration of Priority Infrastructure Provision (KPPIP) under the coordination of the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs. The certificate was given to each respective Developer and Manager Business Entity (BUPP) responsible for project implementation. The three PSEL projects that have obtained PSN status are PSEL Bekasi City in West Java managed by Bekasi Environment Nusantara, PSEL Bogor Raya in West Java developed by Nusantara Bogor New Energy, and PSEL Denpasar Raya in Bali operated by Nusantara Bali New Energy. Meanwhile, Denera CEO and DIM Director of Investment Fadli Rahman explained that the three BUPPs were formed through a PSEL partner selection process by DIM. Each business entity will subsequently be tasked with developing and implementing the project according to the work plan and governance agreed upon with the government. According to Fadli, the PSN designation marks an important momentum in reforming the national waste management system because it shows that PSEL development is now viewed as part of the state’s strategic agenda. “For Denera, this status not only accelerates realisation at the three initial locations but also serves as an important foundation for developing PSEL facilities in subsequent locations,” Fadli said.
