Dilapidated bridge

There are two bridges in front of the traditional market in
Jatinegara. One of them spans the Matraman Raya Road in front of
the Merdeka elementary and junior high schools.

Some days ago, I saw a housewife step through a rustworn step
when descending one of the bridges. The woman stepped through a
wooden plank which covered the hole in the iron step. She needed
help to get out of the snare.

The woman had scratches all over her foot and she hopped with
great difficulty towards a mini van.

Several steps of the bridge are worn-out by rust and are
riddled with holes. Some of the holes are only covered with
wooden planks, secured in place with rafia.

A vendor doing business underneath the stairs said that a
similar incident had occurred before the housewife's accident.

Before more serious accidents happen, we hope that the Jakarta
Administration will pay more attention to the condition of the
bridge since pedestrians using the bridge are at risk.
